Latest stories from RFSA: our work and our grant recipients

We are looking for a new Trustee Apprentice!
The RFSA Foundation is looking to appoint a Trustee Apprentice. The Apprentice would have the opportunity to join Trustee meetings to observe and learn about the workings of a registered charity Trustee Board, whilst having to bear none of the responsibility that comes with full Trusteeship. The Board Apprentice would not become a Director and would have no voting rights but would be given the opportunity to fully participate in one or more sub-committee groups.

The Trustee Apprentice will as such be treated as a Board member during the placement year but without being an active part of the Trustee meeting discussions unless asked directly for input. This is to avoid any issues of shadow directorship occurring. This would be a 1 year post, with the opportunity for a 1 year extension following a review at the end of the first year. The position will be unpaid although all reasonable travel expenses will be paid. There will be a Strategic Away Day held in March 2023 to which the Apprentice would be very welcome to join and input.

What a Board Apprentice can expect from the RFSA
  • To be invited to attend all regular Trustee Meetings, including the AGM, and receive relevant Board papers.
  • To observe and learn about the workings of a Trustee Board.
  • To observe and learn about the governance and strategic management of a charity.
  • To undergo an induction process and have access to learning and support resources.
  • To join one or more sub-committee groups and become fully involved in areas of strategic work.
  • An invitation to join a Learning Visit to one of the RFSA grant recipient organisations to learn about their work and key issues within the sector.
  • To provide a relevant reference upon completion of the appointment.

What the RFSA can expect from you
  • To sign a letter of appointment, which will include confidentiality clauses, with the Board for a term of one year.
  • To attend Trustee Meetings (virtually or in person).
  • To share views and knowledge with the Board when invited to do so.
  • To engage with the strategic work of the charity through a sub-committee(s).
  • To provide feedback on the improvement of the Board Apprenticeship scheme.
  • To make a brief presentation and/or write a note to the Board at the end of the apprenticeship on what has been learnt and contributed.

RFSA recognises the value of diversity in all its forms at all levels of the organisation, including at Board level. We wish to attract people from a broad range of backgrounds, demographics and cultures to steer and inform our work. We are aiming for inclusivity, richness of experience and diversity to ensure a Board of Trustees that reflects the diversity of our society. A strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of our values and we celebrate its role in the creation of an inclusive workplace culture. We actively encourage applications from underrepresented groups as part of our commitment to improve the diversity of our team.  Full induction, support and training is given where needed and the Apprentice will be assigned a Trustee Mentor from the current Board.

An information pack and description of a full Trustee role, to provide some background to the work of the RFSA Trustee Board, is available here.

Please note that this is a voluntary role, with any reasonable expenses paid.

Please submit a CV, reference, and an explanation of why you think you would make a good Trustee Apprentice to the Foundation Secretary admin@rfsafoundation.org by Monday 28 November 2022. Interviews are expected to take place in December via Zoom.
